Disc Check Valve
Browse:19
Product Introduction:
A disc check valve is a family of automatic valves that uses a swinging, tilting, or lifting disc to control flow direction. The core principle is simple: forward flow pressure pushes the check valve disc off its seat, allowing media to pass. When flow stops or reverses, the disc is forced back onto the check valve seat, creating a tight seal to prevent backflow. This mechanism protects crucial equipment like pumps and compressors.

Product Overview

In the complex network of industrial, commercial, and municipal piping systems, ensuring fluid flows in one intended direction is paramount for safety, efficiency, and equipment protection. This critical role is fulfilled by check valves, also widely known as non-return valves or one-way valves. Among the various types of check valves, the disc type check valve stands out for its reliability and versatility. This article provides a comprehensive overview of disc check valves, their operation, types, and key selection criteria for engineers and procurement specialists.

Rubber Disc Check Valve

Disc check valves are opened by the pressure of the fluid and closed by the spring as soon as the flow ceases and before the reverse flow occurs.

Swing check valve or tilting disc check valve is a check valve in which the disc, the movable part to block the flow, swings on a hinge or trunnion, either onto the seat to block reverse flow or off the seat to allow forward flow. The seat opening cross-section may be perpendicular to the centerline between the two ports or at an angle. Swing Check valves prevent reversal of flow through pipe lines. Most swing check valves can be installed in horizontal or vertical, upward flow, piping. They offer low resistance to flow and are particularly suited to low velocity service.

Tilting Disc Check valves are similar to swing check valves. In most installations, slamming is minimized upon reversal of flow so noise and vibration are reduced.

Features & Benefits

1

Low Pressure Drop

Designed for minimal flow resistance, ensuring efficient system operation with lower energy consumption.

2

Reliable Sealing

Ensures tight sealing to prevent reverse flow and maintain system pressure integrity.

3

Versatile Installation

Can be installed in horizontal or vertical positions with upward flow, offering flexible piping solutions.

4

Low Velocity Service

Particularly suited for applications with low fluid velocities where other valves may not operate effectively.

5

Reduced Noise & Vibration

Tilting disc designs minimize slamming upon flow reversal, reducing noise and vibration in the system.

6

Multiple Configurations

Available in swing, tilting disc, dual plate, and single plate designs to meet various application requirements.

Product Types & Configurations

Disc check valves are engineered in several configurations to meet specific application needs:

Dual plate type wafer check valve ductile iron 20inch 150lb EPDM seal

Dual Plate Check Valve

Ductile Iron body with rubber lined

Single plate type wafer check valve WCB 20inch 150lb metal seated

Single Plate Check Valve

Rubber or metal seat

Swing type check valve stainless steel 20inch 150lb butt welded end

Swing Check Valve

Metal seat

Tilting disc check valve rubber or metal seat

Tilting Disc Check Valve

Rubber or metal seat

Understanding the differences, such as in a lift check valve vs swing check valve comparison, is crucial for correct check valve sizing and selection.

Advantages and Selection Considerations

Disc check valves offer several benefits, including simple design, effective sealing, and a wide range of sizes. For optimal performance, consider these factors:

Performance

Look for designs that offer low pressure drop and reliable sealing to avoid issues like a swing check valve not sealing.

Operation

Ensure proper swing check valve installation direction for correct function.

Standards

Valves manufactured to ASME B16.34 check valve standards guarantee dimensional and pressure-temperature integrity.

Special Features

For sensitive systems, specify a water hammer check valve or a non-slam swing check valve to protect pipelines.

Key Applications Across Industries

The right industrial check valve enhances system integrity across numerous sectors:

  • Water & Wastewater: A standard check valve for water line or a robust check valve for wastewater system prevents backflow contamination.

  • Oil and Gas: High-integrity check valve oil and gas applications demand valves meeting standards like API 6D check valve specifications.

  • HVAC: An HVAC check valve manages the flow of water or refrigerants in heating and cooling circuits.

  • General Industry: From a check valve for pump discharge to a steam line, these valves are ubiquitous. Selecting the correct check valve pressure rating and check valve disc material (like stainless steel for corrosion resistance) is essential.

Valve Construction & Components

Below is a detailed breakdown of the key components that ensure the reliability and performance of our swing disc check valves.

The cross-sectional diagram of swing disc check valve

1 Flexible Graphite Gasket: For Class 150 valves, spiral wound gasket for Class 300 & 600 valves, and ring joint for Class 900 & above valves or as an option for the Class 600 valves on customer request.

2 Hinge and Hinge Pin: Provided and mounted so as to permit full movement of the disc.

3 Standard Renewable Seal Welded Seat: With stellite 6 while optional screwed-in seat.

4 Standard Swing Disc Type: Used in horizontal position for liquid service application or used in vertical position where liquid flow from bottom to top.

5 Drain Tapping Provision: Standard bosses for a drain tapping at the lower part of body centerline. Additional bosses conform to customer requirements.
