Product Overview

A lift check valve, also commonly referred to as a non-return valve, is a self-actuating valve designed to allow fluid to flow in one direction only. Its operation is elegantly simple: the fluid pressure lifts the lift check valve disc (or piston) off its seat, permitting flow. When flow stops or reverses, gravity and backpressure force the disc back onto the seat, creating a tight seal and preventing reverse flow. These valves can be installed in both vertical lift check valve and horizontal lift check valve configurations, depending on the piping layout and application requirements.

Design Features

ShieldTM Lift-check valve is a check valve in which the disc, sometimes called a lift, can be lifted up off its seat by higher pressure of inlet or upstream fluid to allow flow to the outlet or downstream side. A guide keeps motion of the disc on a vertical line, so the valve can later reseat properly. When the pressure is no longer higher, gravity or higher downstream pressure will cause the disc to lower onto its seat, shutting the valve to stop reverse flow.

Lift check valves are two ways of referring to standard lift check valves. These valves utilize a piston-shaped plug rather than a cone, the high-performance designs of cast steel check valves are used to prevent backflow by reacting to the line fluid in your petrochemical, gas or oil system.

Features & Benefits

A lift check valve is commonly used in piping systems in which globe valves are being used as a flow control valve. They have similar seating arrangements as globe valves.

Flow to lift check valves must always enter below the seat. As the flow enters, the disk or ball is raised within guides from the seat by the pressure of the upward flow. When the flow stops or reverses, the disk or ball is forced onto the seat of the valve by both the back-flow and gravity.

Multiple Configurations

Available in plate, EN Z type, and API T type designs to meet various industry standards.

Application Fields

The primary advantage of a lift check valve is its ability to provide a positive seal with minimal leakage, making it ideal for high-pressure services. A high pressure lift check valve is often specified in critical industries. Common applications include:

  • Oil and Gas: For pipeline and production services where preventing backflow is essential for safety.

  • Water Treatment: A lift check valve for water treatment plants helps manage clean and chemical feed lines.

  • Power Generation: A steam lift check valve is engineered to handle high-temperature steam lines in boilers and turbine systems.

  • HVAC: An HVAC check valve is used in heating and cooling systems to control chilled or hot water flow.

  • Pump Protection: Installed as a check valve for pump discharge to prevent damage from backflow and water hammer.

When comparing a swing check valve vs lift check valve, the latter is typically chosen for faster closing action, better suitability for pulsating flows, and superior performance in high-pressure scenarios.

Selecting and Maintaining Your Valve

Selecting the correct valve involves considering factors like the Cv value check valve (flow coefficient), pressure rating, and material compatibility. Standards such as ASME B16.34 check valve specifications ensure quality and dimensional consistency. For noise-sensitive environments, a silent check valve variant may be preferred to reduce the sound of disc closure.

Proper installation is crucial. Understanding how to install lift check valve correctly ensures optimal function and longevity. Common issues like a check valve leaking are often traced to worn seats, damaged discs, or improper installation. Furthermore, selecting a valve designed to mitigate water hammer check valve effects can protect your entire piping system from damaging pressure surges.
